The cause of death of actor Matthew Perry from the latest autopsy results has been revealed to the media. The Friends star died due to the acute effects of ketamine.

Matthew Perry was found dead in the swimming pool of his residence in Los Angeles on October 28 2023. Reporting from the Associated Press on Saturday (16/12/2023), the results of the autopsy were released by the Los Angeles police on Friday (15/12) local time. It was previously stated that Matthew Perry died from drowning, but apparently that was only a secondary factor in the actor’s death.

The police explained in their official report that Matthew Perry died due to the acute anesthetic effects of the ketamine he consumed. The 54-year-old actor’s closest relative said that Matthew Perry regularly consumes ketamine as therapy for the depression and anxiety disorders he experiences.

It’s just that the autopsy report found that the level of ketamine in Matthew Perry’s body was too high for someone who consumed it as a medicine for depression. In fact, levels of ketamine in Matthew Perry’s body were found to be equivalent to the general anesthesia that doctors use as an anesthetic before surgical procedures.

“The amount of ketamine in his body was enough to cause him to lose consciousness and the ability to stay above water,” said Dr. Andrew Stolbach reading the autopsy report.

“Using drugs in a pool or hot tub, especially when alone, is extremely risky, and unfortunately the risk to Matthew Perry here was fatal,” he continued.

Explained by Dr. Andrew Stolbach, the medicines consumed by Matthew Perry are actually safe to use as prescribed.

It was further stated that the ketamine content during several weeks of treatment would not reach that high level (when Matthew Perry died). The reason is because ketamine is a drug whose metabolism process is fast, in a matter of hours.

In the same autopsy report, Matthew Perry’s death was also caused by coronary heart disease and consumption of buprenorphine, a type of drug used for opioid use disorder.
