Matthew Bergeron’s Journey to Becoming a Top Offensive Guard at Atlanta Falcons Training Camp

Matthew Bergeron enjoys every rehearsal he takes part in with the veterans at Atlanta Falcons training camp. “It’s a good thing for my career,” he told local media after Monday’s practice.

The Victoriavillois took the place of Matt Hennessy on the offensive line with the starting group. The latter, with whom he is battling for the starting position as left guard, suffered a knee injury last week. His condition is being assessed daily, but he should return to his place in the coming days.

Until then, it’s Bergeron who benefits by taking on experienced defensive players like Grady Jarrett and David Onyemata during practices.

I’m better as the days go by. As a rookie, that’s all you can do. That and being a good teammate. That’s really my goal for the season.

The 1.96 m and 146 kg (6 ft 5 in, 323 lb) colossus can also count on the advice of Jake Matthews, one of the best blockers in the league, who is positioned next to him on the offensive line.

I feel that playing alongside him helps me communicate better. Often, there are decisions that are made in a split second and you have to deliver. When I was with the rookies, it was a little slower. But with the regulars, everything is faster. So I feel that playing at this pace helped me a lot, continued Matthew Bergeron.

As a rookie, when you’re called up to play with the starters, you have to go out there and be able to play fast. That’s what I tried to do by getting better over time. I try to up my game, do my job when my name is called and give my 100%. We’ll see where it takes me.

He does a very good job

The 23-year-old must actually put all the advice that comes into his ear into action as quickly as possible. His position in the final formation depends on it, presumably. But the task is not simple. He must also make the transition from blocker to guard, a position closer to the ball on the line of scrimmage. At the guardhouse, you have to be quick with your hands and feet, he explained.

The opportunity that has presented itself can therefore become a double-edged sword. The Syracuse University product, however, is optimistic that he will be able to prove the extent of his versatility in leadership of the team.

Falcons head coach Arthur Smith just seems to have noticed. In a press briefing on Tuesday, the driver said he felt no nervousness in Bergeron’s game. He does a very good job. He handles the situation well. There is no major problem, but like everyone, he has things to work on, continued Smith.

But the latter remains realistic. Matthew Bergeron is a rookie and he must fight to get the position he covets for the start of the season on September 10. The main interested party does not have any expectations.

I just focus on the next practice. We are starting to learn the playbook, so I have to improve in this system and no matter what happens, September 10 will come. I focus on being in the moment, getting better every day and being a good teammate.
