Matteo Berrettini returns to win a tournament following yet another injury. The Roman tennis player prevailed in the ATP 250 in Marrakech, beating the Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena, n.64 ATP and reigning champion, in the final in two sets on the Moroccan red clay, with a score of 7-5, 6-2 in one hour and 46 minutes.
The 27-year-old Roman, n.135 ATP, in the draw with the protected ranking, returned as a protagonist in the last act of a major circuit tournament following a year and a half, from the ATP 250 in Naples, in October 2022. For Berrettini it was the 13th final and this is the eighth title in Morocco, the fourth on clay. Thanks to the points won the blue will rise to n.84 in the ATP ranking.
The victory comes following a not particularly brilliant period for the Viola tennis player (he is a Fiorentina fan, ed.). A period punctuated by physical injuries and personal difficulties that caused him to plummet in the rankings.
In June 2022, “The Hammer” – so named for the violence of his serve and forehand – reached his best ATP ranking, placing sixth. The highest moment of his career remains the Wimblendon final once morest Novak Djokovic, played on 11 July 2021.
With today’s victory in Marrakech, Matteo Berrettini wins his eighth ATP title. The last triumph was in London, at the 2022 Queen’s tournament.
