The musician played Wednesday at the Romanesque church of Saint-Sulpice as part of the Hyperouest festival. Sad.

The Hyper Ouest festival sold him as a lamenting champion and that’s not wrong, even if the Englishman’s style is more easily defined by a heavy elegiac bent, sometimes salted with a bit of dark hysteria. Under the ancestral vaults of the Romanesque church of Saint-Sulpice – yes, yes, it is also the West of Lausanne – the musician who some also know under the name of The Third Eye Foundation demonstrated Tuesday evening his great mastery in the use of loops, juggling with his own live recordings of voice, guitar and saxophone.
The former DJ and electronics engineer multiplies the sound layers to the point of reaching pseudo-orchestral climaxes where he seems to have split into five – at least! A well-done affair, but a little less convincing in terms of developed aesthetics. Matt Elliott is a bit of a Leonard Cohen fan who would have hesitated to learn the bouzouki and would have finally fallen back on the art of declining “Bella Ciao” in several versions, each sadder than the other.
A concert finally outraged and tiresome, despite small interludes where the young fifty-something is nevertheless sardonic and disillusioned. No one is forced to sound like their music.
