ACTORS Matt Damon and Casey Affleck have a long history together that spans more than four decades. In a new interview with People, Damon, 53, revealed that their relationship with Casey, 48, and Casey’s brother, Ben Affleck, is a deep one.

“We grew up together,” Damon says, describing how natural their collaboration on a film like The Instigators, which is currently in theaters and on Apple TV+ starting August 9.

Damon explains that shared experiences, relationships, trust and love are key to their collaboration. “There’s a deep understanding of who we are,” he adds.

In the film industry, Damon said they don’t have to worry about each other’s feelings, which he really appreciates.

Damon stars as Rory, a father who teams up with Casey’s character, Cobby, an ex-con, to rob a corrupt politician in this heist comedy directed by Doug Liman.

The film’s synopsis states that after a botched robbery, the two are caught in a mess, pursued by cops, incompetent bureaucrats, and a vengeful crime boss. The Instigators also stars Hong Chau, Michael Stuhlbarg, Paul Walter Hauser, Alfred Molina, and Ron Perlman.

The film is set and produced in Damon and Casey’s childhood hometown. For Casey, The Instigators is a chance to reconnect with their Boston roots.

“Boston has changed a lot. It’s definitely not the city we grew up in. On the other hand, it’s a place I still feel more at home in than anywhere else,” Casey said.

Damon reminisced about chasing the Hollywood dream with brother Affleck in the lead-up to the Oscar-winning success of Good Will Hunting in 1997. He said not being afraid to be vulnerable with each other as young men in Boston was part of their experience.

“Part of being an actor and putting yourself in that position and being rejected over and over again — knowing that other people are living the same life and making the same sacrifices, it was a shared experience that made us come together and talk about it,” Damon recalled. (People/Z-3)
