“The Matrix” from 1999 is considered one of the most influential science-fiction films of all time. The cult work of the Wachowski sisters (formerly known as the Wachowski brothers) inspired three sequels: “The Matrix Reloaded” and “The Matrix Revolutions” from 2003, and “The Matrix Resurrection” from 2021.

The fourth part, which appeared following an 18-year break and was the first directed solely by Lana Wachowska, turned out to be a huge box office failure. That’s partly because “The Matrix 4,” like the entire Warner Bros. lineup. in 2021, was available simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max (at no additional cost). The film grossed just $159 million worldwide once morest a budget of $190 million.

“Matrix 5” will be made! But without the Wachowski sisters behind the camera. What regarding Keanu Reeves?

Financial failure did not deter Warner Bros. “Variety” announces that “Matrix 5” will be made.

This will be the first part without Lana or Lily Wachowski as directors. Instead, Drew Goddard, the screenwriter of Ridley Scott’s “The Martian”, for which he was nominated for an Oscar, will take over the director’s duties. He will also write the script and produce with Sarah Esberg. However, Lana Wachowski will remain in the world of “The Matrix” as an executive producer.

Goddard, who began writing single episodes of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Lost,” also wrote scripts for “Project Monster” and “World War Z.” In 2015, he created Netflix’s “Daredevil” and was the director (and screenwriter) of “The Cabin in the Woods” and “Bad Times at the El Royale.” The fifth part of “The Matrix” will be his third directorial project.

It is not yet known who from the cast will return. Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss were the leads in all the previous films, while Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jonathan Groff, Neil Patrick Harris and Priyanka Chopra Jonas joined them in the latest installment.

Plot details have not yet been revealed, but Warner Bros.’ Jesse Ehrman. Motion Pictures, revealed that the story will develop the world of “The Matrix” and will not stray too far from its roots.

– Drew came to Warner Bros. with a new idea that we believe will continue the world of The Matrix in an incredible way: both paying homage to what Lana and Lilly started over 25 years ago, and being his own unique take based on his own love of the series and characters,” Ehrman said in a statement. quoted by Variety.

– I’m not exaggerating when I say that the Matrix films changed both cinema and my life – said Goddard. “Lana and Lilly’s brilliant artistry inspires me every day and I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to tell stories in their world,” added the new “Matrix” director.
