Mathieu will remain an emblematic candidate for the 14th season of Top Boss. Tele-Leisure : Why did you choose to impose the pheasant during your semi-final event?
Mathieu : It is a game that I have already hunted and whose taste I appreciate. As a cook, this meat requires mastery. I thought it would be interesting to do a real kitchen. By working the whole pheasant, asking them to pluck it, it really represents what cooking is all regarding. It’s more rewarding to do things in their true form, to do things from A to Z because that way you have more connection with the product. And I said to myself that it might disturb the other candidates!

Was it because there was no contact with the product that you were destabilized by Danny’s ordeal?
If I was thrown off balance, it’s because molecular cuisine is something I did years ago and it never really connected with me. I was lost during the ordeal and I didn’t have enough time to think. I say bravo to Danny because he succeeded in destabilizing me and that was the goal.

After your elimination, were you able to debrief with Glenn Viel?
We both have a one-on-one during which we talk regarding my career, the competition: we say a lot of things to each other. Although I’m eliminated, he was proud of me and that was the greatest satisfaction for me. That’s when Jacques comes to surprise me. It was great! That’s why the defeat was not so hard, I was able to be with Jacques immediately. I had the easiest defeat of Top Boss because I had instant support. If I had been alone, I would have thought of my brother, I would have had hatred and in fact, not at all! It’s without hard feelings and congratulations to Hugo and Danny! Of course I would have liked to go to the finalit would have been great to experience this moment of lifting the knife, but it will never be the case.

Did you know that Jacques was in Paris?
But no ! He respected Top Boss end to end. When he did The Hidden BrigadeHe did not say anything to me, when he surprised me, this asshole, he didn’t tell me anything! But he was right, it was much more impactful. I was so happy to see him.
What do you remember from your journey?
I was lucky to go this far and to have laughed a lot with Glenn Viel. These are memories that can’t be taken from me. I loved doing Top Boss, it taught me a lot on a professional level. I learned instinctive cooking that I did not practice. I’ve always liked to anticipate and this show gave me an added advantage.

Which event did you enjoy the most?
The first, with Jacques, just before the selection of the brigades. We laughed a lot. As for my worst event, it will remain that of Danny in the semi-finals.
Were you surprised by the reviews on your dish dedicated to hunting?
I had anticipated it, I was psychologically ready. It doesn’t reach me.

How did you react when Danny returned to the quarter-finals?
I was disappointed because I would have liked it to be Jacques! But Danny beat all 11 candidates, so congratulations. He deserves it.
Did you pull Jacques’ ears when you learned of the existence of the Hidden Brigade?
No, he played the game. Top Boss, we have always been fair with them because we respect them enormously. On the other hand, if, I sued him because he didn’t win! (laughs)
Did the big brother speak?
Yes, and it was expensive!
Did cooking for French palates change anything?
Coming back to France made me nostalgic. I went back to basics, I cooked products with which I learned my trade. I loved coming back!
