Materialize opens a new factory for 3D metal printing in the US. Here CMF implants will be printed, patient specific matters. By printing these in the US, Materialize wants to deliver to American doctors faster than when this is done from Belgium.

“With the opening of our new metal 3D printing center in the US, we are bringing personalized care closer to American patients,” says Brigitte de Vet, Vice President Medical at Materialise.

The new plant in Plymouth, Michigan, will specialize in the additive manufacturing of personalized titanium cranio-maxillofacial (CMF) implants. CMF implants are used for facial reconstructive surgery. So far, Materialize only produces titanium CMF implants in the 3D printing factory in Belgium. With the new 3D metal printing factory in the US, Materialize can better respond to the demands of surgeons and significantly shorten the delivery time of fully personalized implants to hospitals in the United States. This expansion of capabilities complements Materialize’s existing production of 3D-printed surgical guides and anatomical models in the United States.

260,000 personalized products per year

“The power of 3D printing, combined with our three decades of experience in 3D planning and medical manufacturing, enables us to accelerate the delivery of personalized medical implants,” says Brigitte de Vet regarding Materialize’s expansion in the US. Currently, Materialize prints around 280,000 personalized instruments and implants for medical care every year. Of these, regarding 160,000 are destined for the American market. Surgeons are increasingly embracing 3D printing solutions in their practice to offer patients personalized care and reduce costs.

Turnover medical grows by 20%

Materialise recently announced that second quarter sales increased 11.6% year-on-year to €64.81 million. Materialize Medical showed strong growth of almost 20% to just under €25 million. Q2 EBITDA was depressed by €5.2 million due to a negative ruling for Materialize in an arbitration case with Zimmer Biomet regarding joint replacement devices.
