Matchmaking Innovation in Health: Personalized Medicine, Technology, and Data Economy

The convergence between precision medicine, technological tools and the data economy greatly expands the opportunities to improve individualized healthcare and population health.

What are the challenges, and boundaries, in the implementation of personalized medicine? What role does each agent in the biohealth ecosystem play? How to optimize the use and exploitation of data? How can administrations work on co-governance models and shared processes for homogeneous application? What advantages do technological solutions such as artificial intelligence offer? And what opportunities are opening up for the Health Technology industry?

These questions, and their respective answers, have been reflected on in the ‘Matchmaking Innovation in Health which, focused on personalized medicine, took place in Barcelona on November 29 and 30, organized by the Spanish Platform for Innovation in Health Technology of Fenin, next to Biocat and the technology center Eurecat.

In this meeting they promoted open innovation ecosystems and public-private strategies aimed at the optimal implementation of personalized medicine and the good use of data and technological innovations, from a transversal approach that promotes synergies between different actors – such as public institutions, startups, R&D+i groups, industry, and technological and clinical centers. All of this, with the added objectives of consolidating public-private collaboration and a high-value business fabric in Catalonia, in addition to generating and retaining research talent and positioning this region as a reference technological pole.

Fenin highlights the solutions, in technologies, products and services, that the health technology industry can provide in this field. “We attended a era of transformation of the health system, where the convergence of personalized and precision medicine, technology and the data economy creates infinite opportunities to improve health and healthcare delivery,” he indicated. Likewise, from Biocat, its general director, Robert Fabregat has pointed out that “from Catalonia we have applied to lead a Regional Innovation Valley at the European level in the field of personalized medicine and advanced therapies, coordinated by Biocat together with various departments of the Generalitat of Catalonia and strategic actors in the health R&D&I ecosystem.” “The different initiatives that we are carrying out aligned with the RIS3CAT strategy allow us to participate in transformative projects, maximizing regional interrelationships, public-private collaboration, adding knowledge and adapting to the needs of society,” he added.

While, Felipe Miralles, Director of Health Technologies at Eurecat, assessed that the conference “has shown the optimal positioning of Catalonia to lead the transformation of health internationally through personalized and precision medicine models and technologies, with an astonishing potential for social impact.” and economic”, and has highlighted that “Eurecat’s strategic commitment and capabilities in applied research, development and transfer in health technologies, from biotechnology and omics sciences to digitalization and artificial intelligence, it aims to consolidate transformative programs and projects, orchestrating the necessary collaboration of private companies and research organizations and public administration.”

The use of data and AI in personalized medicine

On the first of the days, the value the use of data for the best care delivery and individualized patient care and how innovative technological solutions such as artificial intelligence can contribute to “data quality”, with special focus on open strategies in Catalonia in this area. In this sense, The participating experts have highlighted the need to generate spaces of trust and co-responsibility between the public and private spheres in the development of personalized medicine. There has also been room for the analysis of its regulatory framework – which is advancing at a pace that is not always even, the speakers agreed – and the role of the Health Technology sector in the digital transformation.

Meanwhile, on the 30th, The reflections have been transferred to the clinical field and health centers, to analyze the challenges that personalized medicine poses to different professionals and levels of care, and the necessary multidisciplinary collaboration. With an eye on the medium term, and as a consequence of the implementation of personalized medicine and the use of tools such as AI, A possible incorporation of new professional profiles into hospital teams has been put on the table, as would be the “data engineer”.

This forum held in Catalonia joins other ‘Health Innovation Matchmakings’ that have already taken place in Madrid, Asturias and, more recently, in the Basque Country and Andalusia, and which will continue with upcoming meetings in new regions. All of them with the same objective: promote technological reference centers throughout the country for the benefit of the health system and society.
