The 22-year-old Draper advanced to the third round of this tournament by defeating world No. 89 J. Munar (Spain) in the first round and No. 9 seed S. Tsitsipas (Greece) in the second round.

In the third round against 24-year-old Auger-Aliassime, Draper lost the first set but broke in the fifth game of the second set to tie the score at one set.

In the final set, while both players kept their serve, Draper, who broke first in the seventh game, was serving for the match in the tenth game. With the score at 40-30 and a match point, Draper attempted a serve and volley. Draper’s shot, which was released from a low position, went into the net and the game was set.

However, Auger-Aliassime protested, claiming that Draper’s shot had hit his own court before being returned. After about five minutes of discussion, including with the supervisor, the decision was upheld and Draper was awarded the victory.

Although it was a controversial decision, the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) posted on their website after the match, “The match ended in unusual fashion following a controversial low volley by Draper. The shot was ruled valid, but replays showed that the ball hit the underside of Draper’s racket frame, bounced onto the court and went over the net,” effectively acknowledging that it was a mistake.

The match ended in a bad way for both teams.

Draper will face 15th seed H. Rune (Denmark) in the quarterfinals. Rune defeated world No. 46 G. Monfils (France) in the third round.
