Matam, July 21 (APS) – The head of the national list of the Naatangue Askan Wi (opposition) coalition, Sheikh Alassane Sène, promises an “independent” National Assembly in the event of victory in the legislative elections of the 31st next.
“What really motivated my candidacy is that today we need an Assembly that speaks on behalf of the people and is there only for the people,” he told APS, on the sidelines of his tour carried out, Wednesday, in the department of Matam.
”It is for this reason, once we have obtained a majority, we will immediately set up an independent Assembly which faces the executive and which exercises its power with rigor, with intelligence but, only in the name of the Senegalese people”, insisted Sheikh Alassane Sène, religious guide and writer.
In this regard, he underlined that he and his collaborators have “for at least three years observed the hemicycle, the proceedings of the plenary sessions and the conditions in which the deputies vote and propose laws”.
The objective, he added, was then to carry out “for two years, visits to the interior of the country to discuss with the populations on all these questions”.
He underlined that this work carried out inside the country “without fanfare”, enabled them to collect “enough” sponsorships and to be present for these polls in more than twenty departments.
In Matam, he indicated that it was mainly for him to visit all of his candidates and supporters but also to “see firsthand the important work they have been doing here for several month.”
On the strength of this observation, Sheikh Alassane Sène is of the opinion that his supporters will have the majority on election night.
“We have great hope that at the end of July 31, 2022, we will have an overwhelming majority in the National Assembly so that we can, the day following these elections, begin consultations for the formation of a government of national unity, force the regime in place to cohabit. And we will consult all the living forces of the nation because an important job awaits us (..)”, he declared.
The leader of the Naatangue Aslan Wi Coalition, moreover, invited the populations as well as his political counterparts to favor peace, understanding and permanent dialogue, for peaceful elections, without clashes.
”The message is a message of peace, of serenity. The country is one and indivisible. So, we will have to give another confidence to the people and make sure that they are in harmony with the Republic, in order to build a Senegal without quarrels, taking as models our religious guides who embody the intrinsic values of our Senegal. ‘, he concluded.
