Austin Butler wears a military uniform. With that characteristic Elvis Presley smile (impossible not to compare), he looks at a woman and hugs her tenderly. This is how “Masters of the Air” begins, the Apple TV+ series where the actor plays pilot Gale Cleven, in charge of Bombardment Group No. 100, also called “Bloody Hundredth,” during World War II. Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg infused the story with the same style of their predecessor miniseries “Band of Brothers” (2001), one of the best series of all time.

Hanks, Spielberg and the other producers of “Band of Brothers” revived the context of World War II, but not from the visceral battlefield, but rather showing the perspective of the groups of American airmen who bombed various points in Germany during World War II. War. “You have to kick the Nazis’ ass and go home early,” Butler’s character says in a scene from the Apple TV+ miniseries, which is less visceral in the first two episodes and very much like a history lesson.

Screenwriter John Orloff translates the most important moments from Donald L. Miller’s book of the same name, “Masters of the Air.” In the main plot, the “Bloody Hundredth”, played by Austin Butler, Barry Keoghan, Anthony Boyle, among others, get on planes for risky missions once morest Nazi Germany. They take control in low oxygen conditions and experience the loss of many men in the air, but more than anything the emotional price of experiencing war.

Episodio 1 de “Masters of the Air”

The first episode is the introduction of the characters. Although Gale (Butler) is the main pilot, he seems more modest and of few words. Instead, his friend and colleague John Egan (Callum Turner) is too funny and takes the deadly conditions of war lightly. The camaraderie between them is noticeable and also their relationship with the subordinate pilots.

Barry Keoghan protagoniza “Masters of the Air”.

In the first scene, Gale and John are saying goodbye to their girlfriends in a bar. Minutes later, John tries to wake up an airman bathed in blood in the midst of the bombing fury. It sounds a bit brutal, but the truth is that, in the first 30 minutes, there is no striking twist that captures attention. Rather, the narrator and the conversations between the pilots reveal the way of military work and the important positions, such as the co-pilots or the navigator, a key position for the strategy on board.

Anthony Boyle es Major Crosby en “Masters of the Air”.

The basis of the first chapter is Gale Cleven, who participates in a bombing raid where different American planes protect them. Afterwards, he feels guilty for not returning with the same number of people to land. Other moments add up, such as the appearance of Barry Keoghan’s character until the end of the episode. Very late. With his Irish accent remembered from “Banshees of Inisherin” (2022), he is an imposing presence in the war plot and the role he plays as the group’s kind friend is intriguing. Overall, the possibility of any of the major characters dying at some point is obvious.

Episodio 2 de “Masters of the Air”

The second chapter of “Masters of the Air” continues to show the camaraderie between the pilots. They eat together, talk regarding the wounded, spend time dancing and playing music or racing bicycles in the bunker where they stay in England. Some of the secretaries who are part of the military company are also at the meetings. And that viscerality of the aerial battlefield is perceived in the moments of battle, but it is not enough to stimulate viewing of the next chapter.

The most interesting thing regarding part two of the miniseries is the union of the British and American air forces. Both groups had different strategies, because the former carried out indiscriminate and deadly bombings, without fear of killing innocent Germans, while the United States attacked economic or military points. In addition, the pressure is noticeable that more planes are falling in difficult weeks. There is a new colonel in command and other characters take center stage, such as Crosby (Anthony Boyle), the new navigator who replaces the previous one who is injured.

In general, the first episodes of the miniseries seek to educate the public regarding the types of airplanes, the importance of the characters, and their daily lives. But the drama of “Band of Brothers,” that behind-the-scenes pain and fear of war, is not exploited as potential. However, it is still interesting to see what will happen with the characters of Barry Keoghan and Callum Turner, who are the most charismatic, and we can only wait for the appearance of other actors in the series, such as Ncuti Gatwa (“Sex Education”) or Thomas Flynn (“Red, white and blue blood”).
