The Faculty of Medicine of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), through the Family Medicine Subdivision (SMF) of the Division of Graduate Studies, and the National Institute of Public Health (INSP), through its School of Public Health, They concluded the general design stage of the Combined Curriculum of the Master’s Degree in Public Health and the Specialization in Family Medicine.
Although the relationship between Family Medicine and Public Health is very close, in Mexico and the rest of Latin America there is no history of similar programs, so this will be an innovative program. The clinical practice of Family Medicine frequently faces situations where, when investigating the reason for a patient’s consultation, it is found that behind that individual case there is a collective health problem. that goes beyond the clinical field of Family Medicine and requires an approach and intervention with the approach, methodology and tools of Public Health.
In the practice of primary medical care or first level of care, Family physicians often practice Public Health practices that were defined a century ago in 1920 by Winslow, among them environmental sanitation, hygiene education, health promotion and the prevention and control of common or frequent diseases. These public health practices of family physicians are essential to prolong healthy years of life and increase the life expectancy of the population they serve, which needs to be reinforced through a combined and double degree study plan, through which graduates will be able to acquire the skills shown in the following figure.
After a period of reflection and analysis between INSP and SMF teachers, the curricular map for this Master’s in Comprehensive Public Health study plan was defined. which includes the basic subjects that are part of the common core of the different modalities of this master’s degree by the INSP, as well as subjects that give specificity to the practice of Public Health in the field of Family Medicine. The curriculum map is shown in the following table:
The master’s program can begin in the second year of the Family Medicine residency. and will continue for one year after finishing the specialty, as shown in the following figure.
It is a program that requires a large load of academic work and practice in Public Health, so those who enroll in said program They must comply with a highly rigorous profile, among whose qualities are the vocation to apply Public Health in the practice of Family Medicine and full-time dedication. Likewise, the entry requirements They require that the resident have had an excellent performance during the first year of residency and that their research protocol for their dissertation in the specialty of Family Medicine has been accepted and approved by the Ethics and Research Committees. of the institution where you carry out your specialty. The profile and entry requirements are shown in the following table.
With this Combined Study Plan, the UNAM Faculty of Medicine fulfills the social responsibility of contributing to the National Health System to train highly trained professionals who contribute to strengthening health promotion programs and disease prevention in health institutions, which are key to modifying the global burden of disease and having a healthier population.
First-year residents of the Family Medicine Specialty who consider that they meet the profile and entry requirements are invited to evaluate this option that UNAM offers for the first time, in collaboration with the INSP.
