Jenny Woo learned to read non-verbal social cues at the age of ten. She was forced to emigrate from China to Houston, Texas (USA) and lacked English skills. She primarily connected with her peers by observing his body language and listening to his voices to learn what excited, inspired, and enraged them. His story of overcoming has gone viral on social media.

Woo learned how to communicate better with managers following using his EI skills at corporations like Deloitte and Cisco. He worked at his children’s Montessori school in Southern California for a time.

While working on his master’s degree at Harvard University in 2018, he invested $1,000 of his savings to launch Mind Brain Emotion, which sells EI-focused card games on Amazon. Last year, the side business generated $1.71 million on Amazon. Woo estimates that 40% of that revenue is profit.

Work 3 hours a week

Between the side business and his three other current sources of income — lecturing at the University of California Irvine, running an online course on EI, and freelance business consulting — he works between three and 30 hours a week, he tells CNBC Make It. His Workload depends on the season, and her multiple sources of income allow her to completely disconnect when her three children are home.

“The mission has always been to make knowledge, skills, competence, mindsets and attitudes accessible… so that everyone can truly enjoy them,” says Woo, 42. “But being able to support my children… is also a true measure of success for me.” she added.

How you run your business

Woo talks regarding how she established her side business, why she chooses to run it alone, and her advice for anyone looking to replicate her path. “It’s a very intentional choice for me to be the [única] foundress. “You also have to be your own cheerleader. When I was still learning English in middle school and high school, there were so many incidents where I felt so ashamed, where I felt like I wasn’t good enough, where I felt like I didn’t know anything.
