Mastering Croissant Etiquette: The Right Way to Eat and Enjoy a Croissant

The croissant is one of the favorite foods for breakfast lovers, but many eat it haphazardly, according to etiquette expert William Hanson.

In a video that has gone viral on Instagram, the Briton presented what he considers to be the right way to taste this famous pastry and above all, what gestures are to be avoided when eating a croissant.

No croissant in the cafe

Dipping your croissant in your coffee should be avoided as much as possible, argues Mr. Hanson.

“In the UK or anywhere in high society, we have to try not to dip our food into our drink. As delicious as a coffee-soaked croissant may be, this practice should be reserved for your home… with the curtains drawn,” explains the etiquette expert.

No butter

Spreading butter on your croissant is also to be avoided, according to William Hanson.

“You don’t have to put butter on a croissant, because it already contains it,” he says.

Do not cut the croissant

Opening your croissant with a knife and then spreading it does not respect the label, claims Mr. Hanson.

The latter rather suggests tearing off a piece of the pastry and then spreading it with a knife.

“Don’t forget to spread the piece of croissant on your plate and not in the air,” says the expert.

William Hanson’s advice was not unanimous among Internet users who posted the video.

Several defended the right to add butter to the croissant, while others pointed out that many French people dipped their croissant in coffee.

One woman even testified that she liked to dip her croissant in her hot chocolate.
