KIGALI, Rwanda, September 3, 2024 -/African Media Agency(AMA)/- The Mastercard Foundation is hosting two side events during the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly on September 22, 2024. The events, which will be held at the Millenium Hilton New York, One UN Plaza Hotel, will address the critical issues of girls’ education and women’s economic empowerment in Africa.
Under the themes “Fostering Inclusive Education for a Sustainable Future” and “Invincibles: Empowering Women, Transforming Africa”, Participants will share successful teaching models and explore solutions to create a more equitable economic environment for women in Africa.
The session “Fostering Inclusive Education for a Sustainable Future” will focus on effective strategies and programs to improve women’s access to learning in Africa, their academic performance, and their transitions to and within secondary education. A key announcement is expected on a Mastercard Foundation partnership focused on initiatives for girls and women. In addition, discussions will focus on the critical role of technology in promoting resilient and inclusive learning in Africa. The Mastercard Foundation is committed to accelerating access to dignified and fulfilling work for 21 million women in Africa by 2030 as part of its “Young Africa Works” strategy.
“The Foundation is excited to partner with exceptional institutions to co-create and scale solutions that have a meaningful impact on communities. Our approach is strongly aligned with the theme of this 79th session, which is to leave no one behind,” said Tina Muparadzi, Executive Director, Education and Transitions at the Mastercard Foundation.
Various stakeholders, including ministries of education, multilateral institutions and donors, are expected to use the approaches highlighted at these events to accelerate impact and capitalize on successful solutions. Confirmed guests include: Dr. Haja Ramatulai Wurie, Minister of Technical and Higher Education of Sierra Leone; Professor Birhanu Nega, Minister of Education of Ethiopia; and the Honourable Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy of Nigeria, Mr. Bosun Tijani.
Reeta Roy, President and CEO of the Mastercard Foundation, highlighted the importance of the discussions, noting that in sub-Saharan Africa, 101 million young people aged 6 to 18 are excluded from formal education. “Yet we have every reason to be optimistic, thanks to the extraordinary and innovative African educators who have designed solutions and are delivering quality education to young people,” said Roy. “Expanding access to education for all is at the heart of the Foundation’s work. At these events, education champions will share their expertise on policies and programs that have proven effective on the continent. By working together, we can amplify these solutions and remove barriers for all, especially girls and women.”
Organized in collaboration with ALADI, the Institute for Leadership and Dialogue in Africa, the Invincibles round table: Empowering Women, Transforming Africawill highlight the unparalleled impact of young African women on economic transformation and propose bold strategies to improve their access to equitable and affordable finance. To do this, the Mastercard Foundation will present insights from its Gender Impact Report, “Women in Africa: Agents of Economic Growth and Transformation by 2030.”
Honorable Jamila Bio Ibrahim, Minister of Youth Development in Nigeria, and Deniece Laurent-Mantey, Executive Director of the White House African Diaspora Advisory Council, will lead discussions on transforming financial systems for women.
These two events underscore the Mastercard Foundation’s commitment to unlocking the potential of African women and contributing to the inclusive development of a prosperous Africa.
