According to Archyde.com, on September 4, local time, about 50,000 teachers gathered on the streets of Seoul, South Korea, demanding that the government better protect their rights.

South Korean teachers, dressed in black, gathered on the road in front of the National Assembly in Seoul to demand the protection of teachers’ rights and the truth about the death of a 24-year-old elementary school teacher. Many teachers took a day off to participate in the rally, and many elementary schools were unable to conduct normal classes. About 30 schools across the country temporarily decided to suspend classes.

“We will protect teachers and make changes so that no more teachers choose to commit suicide,” organizers said in a statement, estimating 60,000 to 70,000 protests in addition to the protests in Seoul. Teachers held rallies elsewhere.

According to South Korean government data, about 100 public school teachers in South Korea committed suicide in the six years to June this year, 57 of whom taught in elementary schools.
