Massive Northern Ring Road Renovations: 5 Things to Know

2023-11-09 18:30:00

While the time-consuming renovation of the Vilvoorde viaduct was launched this summer and will last no less than eight years, other titanic projects are looming on the horizon of the Brussels Ring. We have already mentioned it: the authorities are preparing to renovate and redevelop the entire northern section of the motorway, between the two E40s, namely between Grand-Bigard and Zaventem, via Wemmel and Vilvoorde.

Here we go for eight years of construction: 5 things to know regarding the colossal and very long renovation of the Vilvoorde viaduct

This fall, the Werkvennootschap, the Flemish public works agency in charge of these projects, is providing more details on the deadlines. The pharaonic construction site should, according to the current schedule, begin in 2025. In total, around ten years of construction will be necessary.

But the administration is counting on phasing by section. The works will first be launched in the “Zaventem zone”, then counterclockwise, will continue in the “Vilvoorde zone”, then the “Wemmel-Jette zone” and finally the “Grand-Jette zone”. Bigard”.

Separate local and transit traffic

In the Zaventem section, there is a question of securing the ring road and creating a parallel structure to separate local traffic and transit traffic. Concretely, a motorist coming from Liège will have to choose in Woluwe-Saint-Etienne between either the direct route to the E19 (Antwerp motorway), or the local section allowing them to take the intermediate exits leading to the airport or the center from Zaventem. “This will improve readability and security,” notes the public structure.

A “historical error”, “only inconveniences”: Flanders’ plans to redevelop the Ring exasperate Brussels, and Jette in particular

The Werkvennootschap will submit a permit at the beginning of next year with the aim of launching the hostilities of the first part in the fall of 2025. Currently, the Grup (land use plan in Flanders) is being finalized.

During the work, all connections will remain possible. Three bands will be accessible, in both directions, tells us the spokesperson for the institution. But the speed will be limited and the bands narrowed. “These will be works with a lot of impact.” Occasional evening closures are not excluded.

These interventions in Zaventem (between the E40 and the E19) should last between 3 and 4 years. Next will come successive zones, whose construction sites may overlap. The complete end of the work is planned for 2035. Not to mention possible appeals…

More than three billion paid by Flanders

What regarding the outcry and blockade threats coming from certain Brussels factions, particularly in Jette where the widening of the Ring and the removal of the Wemmel exit are unthinkable? According to the administration, this phasing makes it possible to launch the first projects and still leaves a few years to continue the dialogue before beginning this more contested part.

In Brussels, voices are raised once morest the redevelopment of the north of the Ring: “We feel despised”

A colossal project, an immeasurable bill. In total, Flanders will spend between 3 and 3.5 billion for this renovation. Pharaonic rise which also includes the creation of cycle paths in the area and public transport projects (the sneltram to Willebroek, the Ringtrambus serving the Rand and the tram leading to the airport).

Two information meetings are still planned this month: November 13 in Zaventem and November 14 in Machelen.
