Armed with bear spray, a group of up to 50 people held up a Los Angeles mall Saturday, making off with about $100,000 worth of luxury items, authorities said.
Between 30 and 50 people stormed the Nordstrom at the Westfield Topanga shopping center in Woodland Hills, using bear spray to neutralize security guards and fleeing with thousands of dollars worth of luxury handbags and high-end clothing, a spokesman for the department said. Los Angeles police received the call of “numerous people shoplifting” shortly after 4 p.m. Police estimated the loss between $60,000 and $100,000.
“Topanga Division officers were promptly responding to the scene and have several investigative leads,” Los Angeles police said in a statement.
There was no immediate word of arrests and the suspects fled in vehicles that included a BMW.

In video of the incident circulating on social media, the suspects wearing hoods and face masks can be seen smashing shelves and running out of the store laden with luxury items.

Los Angeles police confirmed that bear spray was used to neutralize two security guards. There is no immediate news on his status.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass called the theft “absolutely unacceptable.”
“Those who committed these acts and similar acts in neighboring areas must be held accountable,” he said in a statement released on Saturday. “The Los Angeles Police Department will continue to work to not only find those responsible for this incident, but to prevent these attacks on retailers from happening in the future.”
