The U.S. police said that under the attack of sandstorms, the visibility along the highway in Illinois dropped sharply on the 1st, causing nearly 100 cars to chase and collide, and at least 6 people were killed. The highway is the main road linking cities such as Chicago and St. Louis.
The Illinois police statement said 40 to 60 passenger vehicles and 30 commercial vehicles were involved in the collision “due to strong winds blowing soil from farmland onto the highway,” AFP reported.
The statement said the collision occurred on Interstate 55 and was followed by vehicles stretching for two miles, with two large trucks ablaze. More than 30 people were sent to the hospital, some with minor injuries and some in critical condition, ranging in age from 2 to 80 years old.
According to the pictures on the scene, firefighters were carrying out rescue work in the dusty sky. Some cars were knocked off the road, some vehicles were emitting thick smoke, and flames sprang out from time to time. The visibility at the scene sometimes approached zero.
