Screening and raising awareness of the risks that promote the occurrence of tumors play a key role in the fight against cancer. To develop these practices, the private hospital Les Bonnettes in Arras (Pas-de-Calais), is organizing a massive screening day between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. this Friday February 16, 2024.
Several types of cancer are affected by this screening campaign: colorectal, prostate and bladder, lung, ENT, cervix and even breast cancer.
On this list, cancers more or less known to the general public, for “ensure that populations at risk become aware of all the cancers that can affect them and enable local treatment in time“, summarizes Doctor Jocelyn Bellier, specialist in thoracic surgery.
As Jocelyn Bellier explains, screening helps prevent cancer from getting worse by discovering cancer cells in time. Lung cancer, for example, remains painless until it becomes incurable and causes severe pain. “We often arrive after the battle, when it is very easy to get tested, you just need to have a chest scan to see if there are any lesions.“
The region is exposed to cancer due to social difficulties, which push residents to consult less and to only go to the doctor in the event of advanced pathology.

Simple screenings, which the inhabitants of Haut-de-France should not do without: the region has an excess cancer mortality of +24% among men and +13% among women compared to the national level according to the Regional Health Agency (ARS). Nord and Pas-de-Calais are the most affected departments.
“Concerning lung cancer, this can for example be explained by the high rate of smoking, but in general, the region is exposed to cancer due to social difficulties, which push residents to consult less and not to go to the doctor only in case of advanced pathology“, summarizes Jocelyn Bellier.
- Breast cancer: self-examination workshop, clinical examination according to assessment between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., radiological examinations by appointment;
- Cervical cancer: distribution of an anti-HPV (papillomavirus) screening kit;
- Colorectal cancer: distribution of a screening kit, medical consultations in case of suspicion;
- Prostate and bladder cancer: individual assessment by a nurse; referral to consultation based on results;
- Lung cancer: meeting from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. with thoracic surgeon Jocelyn Bellier, carrying out shortness of breath tests;
- ENT cancer: meeting with ENT surgeon Xavier Roux.
