The Massa-Rossi pairing, illuminated in Cristina Kirchner’s Senate office on Friday night, will compete on August 13 in the Unión por la Patria presidential contest with the formula made up of Juan Grabois and Paula Abal Medina, for the sector called “ Just and Sovereign”. Shortly following the expiration of the registration period before the electoral justice scheduled for this midnight, the political negotiations had their center in the province of Buenos Aires. At 9:00 p.m., the same formula as in 2019 was ratified: Axel Kicillof-Verónica Magario. “We are going to sign,” the governor said at 9:50 p.m.

At 8:20 p.m., Juan Grabois announced his participation in the Paso. “In January of this year, I announced my candidacy for president with a clear political statement: if there was no candidate from the decimated generation who firmly represents the defense of national sovereignty and a transformative program, we were willing to do so. Yesterday the Massa-Rossi formula was announced and, as we are consistent with our convictions, today together with Paula Abal Medina we assume the challenge of competing in the presidential elections in Justa and Soberana within Unión por la Patria”, announced Grabois. Abal Medina is a sociologist, and the daughter of Juan Abal Medina, a former collaborator of Juan Domingo Perón.

The final negotiation found Kirchnerism focused on building a “powerful” ballot in the province of Buenos Aires and the day was consumed with intense meetings. Finally, on the Unión por la Patria ballot, Pedro’s “Wado” will be attached to the Massa-Rossi formula, to senator and Máximo Kirchner as the first candidate for national deputy, plus Axel Kicillof’s candidacy for governor. Juliana Di Tullio will also appear on that list, seconding De Pedro, in a “pure K” pairing. In Deputies, Victoria Tolosa Paz (albertismo), Paco Manrique (from SMATA, proposed by Cristina Kirchner), Cecilia Moreau (massismo), Santiago Cafiero (albertismo) and Luana Volnovich (La Cámpora) were aligned. Rodolfo Tailhade (Kirchnerism) and Carlos Castagnetto (AFIP), were located in expectant positions.

“When a colleague, in carrying out a task, makes an effort for the whole, it must be recognized. Thank you Máximo Kirchner for leading the list of National Deputies for the Province of Buenos Aires”, Kicillof announced on Twitter at 11:30 p.m.

He also wrote to Wado de Pedro: “You grabbed the marshal’s baton, you walked, you militated and you demonstrated, in a short time, that the values of Peronism, Néstor and Cristina are valid.”

Before registration there was a surprise bid for the vice candidacy. For that position, Kicillof wanted to repeat with Magario, former mayor of La Matanza. One version indicated that Martín Insaurralde fought that position for himself, supported by other mayors of the suburbs.

“Mayor force,” Massa congratulated last night Malena Galmarini, his wife, who will fight for the candidacy for the mayor of Tigre with the Peronist (and former Massista) Julio Zamora, current president.

Patricia Cubría, from the Evita Movement, will compete for the mayor of La Matanza with Fernando Espinoza, who will be running for re-election. Mayra Mendoza, from La Cámpora, signed up to be re-elected in Quilmes.

In CABA, Leandro Santoro, Nito Artaza (for Sciolismo) and former minister Eli Gómez Alcorta registered to compete for the candidacy for Buenos Aires head of government. The Minister of Tourism, Matías Lammens, was at the head of the list of local legislators, and the camporista Paula Penacca and the Peronist Eduardo Valdés, at the head of the national deputies.

The Massa-Rossi formula reflects a new balance reached in the ruling party. The Minister of Economy, who returns to the presidential fight as he did in 2015 allied with De la Sota, achieved the “certainty” that he demanded to go through the final path of his administration as Minister of Economy. Kirchnerism gave up space in the formula to concentrate on the province of Buenos Aires and in the positions at the top of the lists of national deputies. Alberto Fernández, who had been relegated in the negotiations, found a point of agreement with Kirchnerism in the nomination of his chief of staff, Agustín Rossi, for vice. And the League of Governors (and also the CGT) managed to form the list of required unity (that was the term used).

The presidential candidacy of the Minister of Economy comes out to dispute a vote in the electorate of the center, where the Larreta-Morales binomial wants to stand as owner in the tough internal battle that awaits them once morest the Patricia Bullrich-Luis Petri binomial. Massa-Rossi is a bet signed by Cristina Kirchner so that Unión por la Patria reaches the second round competitively, in which the ruling party imagines disputing with Bullrich.

Two weeks ago, Sergio Massa closed the Frente Renovador congress with a monumental staging, typical of a presidential candidate. He had just shared a trip through China with Máximo Kirchner and having been invited by Cristina Kirchner to the select box on May 25. As a pilot of an economy marked by high inflationary levels, he had said “one more quilombo does not enter Argentina” to pronounce himself in favor of a list of unity that provides (political) certainty.

“Thank you, dear Wadito,” Massa greeted him on Twitter at noon on Saturday, in his first statement as a presidential candidate. The minister was this Saturday in the Chamber of Deputies and in his office in Economy, following the closing of the lists.

A little earlier Wado de Pedro had congratulated the new formula. “We are going to build the victory of President Sergio Massa and Governor Axel Kicillof,” harangued the Interior Minister who for a day and a half led the formula with Manzur.

De Pedro’s candidacy began to be downloaded on Thursday night, a few hours following the video in which he announced it. The negotiations were pushed by Sergio Massa and the League of Governors. That Thursday, the Kirchnerist deputy Hugo Yasky, the elected governor of Tucumán, Osvaldo Jaldo, and Tucuman senator Pablo Yedlin, confirmed the Wado-Manzur formula. Cristina Kirchner had given the go-ahead on Wednesday, when she received Manzur in the Senate. Everything was set for the internal competition once morest fellow candidates Daniel Scioli and Agustín Rossi.

It was then that the governors played hard to enforce the demand of June 11 in favor of “a list of unity.” Raúl Jalil (Catamarca) and Gerardo Zamora (Santiago del Estero) asked Alberto Fernández to take Scioli out of the fight. The governors expressed some disagreement with the Wado-Manzur formula. “It does not measure”, they agreed. The president, said the governor of La Rioja, Ricardo Quintela, proposed that they promote Massa to the presidency, and that he would nominate Rossi, a digestible figure Cristina Kirchner, as vice. Juan Manuel Olmos officiated as presidential delegate to bring the parties together (the massismo, the kirchnerismo and the governors).

The Peronist governors wanted to be out of the tussle between Scioli and Wado de Pedro, and they maintained, like Massa and the CGT, that the situation in the country might not bear any more noise.

Quintela, on behalf of all the governors, said this Saturday regarding the Massa-Rossi formula: “It gains a lot of competitiveness. Personally, I like the consensus formula that was reached. Unity was necessary.”

Quintela said more: in communications with Cristina Kirchner “she always told me that the best thing was the single list.”

“What Cristina did is worth a lot. She put the interest of the country and the Argentines above their interests, ”the governor assessed, due to the withdrawal of Wado de Pedro from the head of the formula.

Agustín Rossi acknowledged that he did not participate in any negotiation. “The president (Alberto Fernández) asked me if I was willing and I said yes. Then they told me that everything was agreed, ”he said. He also said that at that time he was considering lowering his candidacy.

After thanking De Pedro, Manzur and Scioli for withdrawing from the candidacy, he said something that some within Unión por la Patria expected: “I always said that I felt and defined myself as a Kirchnerista. I am a Kirchner. I have always said that I am a Kirchnerist who was in the administration of Alberto Fernández. I never changed ”, he defined. Rossi said that Cristina Kirchner will have a “political leadership” role in the campaign.

In Santa Cruz, Alicia Kirchner and the head of YPF, Pablo González, signed up to go to the national senate, and the governor of Entre Ríos, Gustavo Bordet, announced that he will go on the list of national deputies for his province.
