Mass Exodus of Technical Directors: Atlético Bucaramanga Joins the Growing List

Zero and seven technical directors have left their positions so far in the second half of the Colombian league. Now the turn was for Atlético Bucaramanga, a team that lost on its visit to Deportivo Independiente Medellín (1-2) in a duel valid for matchday 14.

The Santander team joins Deportes Tolima, Envigado, Junior de Barranquilla, Boyacá Chicó, Atlético Huila and Jaguares de Córdoba as the teams that have sought a change of scenery on their technical bench.

Alexis Márquez announced his resignation from Bucaramanga at a press conference, after the loss against DIM at the Atanasio Girardot. The strategist went before the media with his captain Javier Reina and there he announced that he was taking “a step aside” due to the lack of results and consequently the “hostile environment” that exists with the fans.

“My situation with the institution is not comfortable. Speaking with the president, I made the decision to step aside… one must be aware of when to step aside and as a coaching staff we leave calm because we deliver what we know about football to the group,” he stated.

And he added: “We are in a position where there are results no matter what, but if they don’t happen it is very complicated. I want them (the players) to be calm… We are in a city where the environment is becoming more and more hostile, not only for the boys but for us as well. I know that by taking a step aside, the weight is lifted a little from them.”

He also added that he had talked about the issue with the group of players during halftime of the game against Medellín and although they themselves asked him to reconsider the situation, the coach recognized that it was the best for everyone. He did appreciate the “commitment and dedication” of his team both in training and in League duels.

“Thank you for your dedication in training and competition. That things don’t work out hurts and even more so with a group so dedicated to results, but we are in a position where if there are no results it is difficult to sustain… That is football,” he concluded.

Márquez then joins Juan Cruz Real (Tolima), Pompilio Páez (Jaguares), Néstor Craviotto (Huila), Mario García (Chicó), Bolillo Gómez (Junior) and Alberto Suárez (Envigado) as the technical directors who have said goodbye in this second semester of Colombian soccer.

He also leaves with 22 duels played in 2023 and a balance of six wins, seven draws and nine losses.
