The police were present with numerous emergency services on the premises of the machine factory, and several officers were still there hours following the fatal shots were fired. A road running in front of the building has been closed. Yellow police tape flapped in the wind.
It was initially unclear whether it was the suspect and the victims and employees of the company, a spokesman for the sheriff’s office said at a press conference. Families of workers gathered at a fire station in the heart of Smithsburg that evening to await news of their fate.
The community has nearly 3,000 residents and is west of Camp David, the presidential estate, and regarding 120 kilometers northwest of Baltimore. The machine shop that has now become the scene of gun violence is located in a sparsely populated area northwest of downtown Smithsburg.
US Senator Chris Van Hollen, a Maryland Democrat, lamented the loss of life in the community amid recent gun attacks in the US and vowed to work to take action. “Today’s horrendous shooting is happening as our state and nation witnesses tragedy following tragedy, and it must stop,” Van Hollen said.
