A new aspect of advertising campaign has emerged in recent times. The government is resorting to artists, influencers or vloggers to criticize its plans and the opposition. These days, videos related to Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz’s 100-day performance are the subject of discussion on social media, and the boycott campaign of all the people who made videos of the 100-day performance is gaining momentum.
Several influencers and PTI supporters alleged that the Punjab government had spent exorbitant amounts of money on the publicity campaign. Influencers or vloggers can charge money in proportion to the number of followers they have, a simple trick is that whoever has more followers has a higher market value and if their videos get likes and comments, Google Also shows this video to more people.
According to a BBC report, influencers and actors on behalf of the Punjab government praised various initiatives of the Punjab government during the last 100 days, including Yasir Hussain, Ayesha Umar, Saboor Ali, Sanam Saeed, Urwa Hussain, Mikal Zulfikar and Saba. A few vloggers like Faisal, Aima Baig and Junaid Akram are also included.
Actress Sajal Ali praised reforms like teaching digital skills in education in Punjab, model Ayesha Umar praised Maryam Nawaz’s steps taken to protect minorities. Urwa Hussain praised the initiatives taken to protect women, Sanam Saeed praised projects like free medicine and air ambulance.
Confirmation of paid promotion
In this regard, actress Saba Faisal explained in a conversation with the BBC that the videos related to the performance of the Punjab government were a ‘paid promotion’.
However, Punjab Information Minister Uzma Bukhari, speaking to the BBC, denied that it was a paid promotion.
Saba Faisal said in his statement that ‘I was shooting some pads and that day also I was on the shoot, so the PR company said that the time is short, the time is till 10 o’clock, you can quickly do this video. will make?’
In response, Saba said to him, “Send me what I see.”
He said, ‘It was a very long paragraph and following seeing it, I said that I would need to prepare for it, so he said, ‘Well, you can only do the last part regarding agriculture,’ so I made that video message. Recorded.
He further said that when he came home at night, the comments section of the rest of my videos were full of abuse from the users, they abused me saying that she does this by taking money and so on.’
Regarding turning off the comments, he said that the PR company had asked to turn off the comments.
Saba said that ‘often in paid promotions we are asked to turn off comments because everyone is competing with each other, so we turn off comments, they said no, so I turned it off.’
In response to a question, he said that it was a paid content and I took it as paid content.
After the public reaction on social media, Saba Faisal deleted the video, but then he said that those who made that video of me said that we have not received money yet, if you delete it, my money will stop. So I posted once more’.
Some even turned down the offer
There are also videos circulating on social media in which various artists and influencers are claiming that Punjab government officials have contacted them to make praise videos regarding Maryam Nawaz’s performance in return for a compensation of five to one million rupees. ‘
One such Vlogger, Hamza Bhatti, claimed that he received a call for promotion from Muslim League-N, in which he was also suggested to close the comments.
Hamza claims that he refused to be part of the paid campaign because ‘I’m someone who doesn’t sell.’
Rebuttal by Punjab Govt
Speaking to the BBC, Punjab Information Minister Uzma Bukhari said that this was not paid content and neither did they choose the artists for this promotional campaign.
Uzma Bukhari said, “The government neither contacted nor paid any compensation to these actors or social media influencers for making this video.” He made a video regarding what he saw.’
What should be prioritized for creating paid content?
If a social media influencer, actor or other celebrity promotes a brand, item or position, they must uphold certain ethical standards.
If one advertises any content or narrative for payment, it must clearly disclose sponsored content or political affiliations.
Also make sure their endorsement is genuine and not just for personal gain.
Encourage respectful dialogue and acknowledge diverse perspectives.
Rather than a specific campaign, consider using your platform to promote voter registration and education.
With these considerations in mind, influencers and actors can promote political awareness while maintaining ethical standards.
