This year’s global reforestation projects include:

United States 80,000 trees to support rare habitat and biodiversity restoration in several Georgia counties. Longleaf pines were once the dominant tree species in the South, covering more than 90 million acres from Virginia to Texas. Today the deciduous pine covers less than 3 of its original range. This ecosystem loss has been devastating for the nearly 600 animal and plant species that depend on it. Longleaf and shortleaf pines are being planted on private and public lands in Georgia through a partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation and The Nature Conservancy. As they grow, they reduce forest fragmentation and support endangered and threatened wildlife such as the red-cocked woodpecker, eastern indigo snake and gopher tortoise. 12,000 trees to support wildfire recovery in Lassen National Forest in California. The Dixie Fire raged through Northern California for three seemingly endless months in 2021. It raged from July through October and was the second largest wildfire in state history with a burn scar of more than 963,000 acres. It can take generations for forests destroyed by wildfires to return to their former glory, if they recover at all. For this reason, urgent and targeted reforestation efforts are vital. This project has a special focus on the health of Lassen National Forest. Not only is it home to hundreds of wildlife species, but it is vital to the health of the landscape and nearby Lake Almanor. Newly planted trees in this area are beginning to restore habitats destroyed by the fire, home to cougars, chipmunks, black bears, long-toed salamanders and many others. Even as the trees take root and grow into mature stands, their root systems prevent erosion while improving Lake Almanor’s water quality. Mexico 4,000 trees to support sustainable forest management, watershed restoration and biodiversity at Mexico’s Cerro Pelon Butterfly Sanctuary. While the legendary migration and nesting of the monarch butterfly is emblematic of Mexico, this species is now facing some of the most iconic challenges of our time. Native oyamel firs, where monarch butterflies often nest, are being pushed to higher elevations and cooler temperatures due to climate change. This reduces the monarch’s nesting area, in addition to reductions from deforestation and land clearing for profitable avocado trees, and it threatens the species’ prospects for long-term survival. The aim of this project is to restore the oyamel fir cover in these areas while benefiting the local community. Spain 4,000 trees to support forest fire recovery in Belorado, Spain. The rolling hills of Belorado is a beautiful area of northern Spain. However, these slopes have seen numerous wildfires and heat waves over the years, making it difficult for the trees that once stood here to put down roots on their own. This has led to increased erosion of the natural landscape. Planting a diverse mix of young deciduous trees in this area will help hold the soil and make the land more resilient to climate change and fires. And for a rural area suffering from urban migration, this project will continue to create landscape maintenance jobs for the entire region.

“Deforestation and climate change might cost the global economy billions in the years to come, and at Mary Kay we hope these projects will mitigate those impacts while creating valuable wildlife habitats,” said Deborah Gibbins, Chief Operating Officer at Mary Kay Inc. “These newly planted forests will grow and serve as valuable resources and ecosystems and be an enduring legacy for generations to come.”

The partnership between Mary Kay and the Arbor Day Foundation began in 2008 and has achieved several important milestones over the course of their 15-year partnership:

In 2008, Mary Kay’s Independent Beauty Consultants began a recycling program, planting a tree in a forest in need for every old Compact makeup case recycled. Thanks to a nationwide recycling effort by Independent Beauty Consultants and their clients and company employees, Mary Kay surpassed the collection goal of 200,000 used makeup boxes. From 2009 to 2012, Mary Kay’s partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation supported the Nature Explore Classrooms program for victims of domestic violence to provide residents with a safe place to connect with nature. Beginning in 2013, Mary Kay began supporting large-scale reforestation projects around the world, including in the United States, Brazil, China, Germany, Ireland, Peru and Madagascar. When Mary Kay cut the ribbon for Richard R. Rogers’ new manufacturing, research and development facility in Lewisville, Texas in 2018, the company celebrated the achievement of planting its one millionth tree by ceremonially planting a tree on the campus. To date, Mary Kay and the Arbor Day Foundation have planted 1.3 million trees as part of their partnership and are confident of continued success this year with an additional 100,000 trees moving forward.

“We are very excited to continue this partnership and to achieve meaningful success in forests around the world,” said Katie Loos, President of the Arbor Day Foundation. “For 15 years, Mary Kay has sought to bring meaningful restoration efforts to the places where they are most needed. Our partners in pink continue to demonstrate their cultivating skills through strategic reforestation projects that underscore their commitment to protecting the planet under Evidence.”
