Marvel’s folding: the Israeli symbols were removed from the character of Shira Haas

The trailer, the anti-Semitic criticism – and the folding: Yesterday (Friday), Marvel Studios launched the first trailer for the movie “Captain America: Brave New World” – the fourth chapter in the solo saga of the patriotic superhero, when Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) stepped into the captain’s shoes instead of his best friend Steve Rogers ( Chris Evans, who retired from the Marvel Cinematic Universe following “Avengers: Endgame”).

Shira Haas received severe criticism online from anti-Israel surfers following the definition of her character, who are even calling for the movie to be boycotted.

But in addition to the intriguing change of shifts in the lead role of the American Homeland Defender, the trailer also included a first look at the main female character played by Israeli actress Shira Haas. The disappointing news: it seems that Marvel decided to recalculate the character’s path, and change her background from end to end.

A brief reminder: when Haas’s participation in the next “Captain America” was first announced, already in 2022, it was reported that she would play an Israeli woman named Ruth Bat-Sharf in the film – a Mossad agent who also functions on the standard of a female superhero known as, well, Sara. This is a relatively old character, who was first introduced between the pages of Marvel comics already in 1980.

Over the years, Sabra fought for the interests of the State of Israel, and it was even possible to see her in action in the skies of Tel Aviv and once morest the background of the Western Wall. Among Sabre’s special powers: superhuman strength, endurance and speed, and the ability to grant others their own special powers. Add to that the training program of the Mossad – and you get a lady who is not recommended to mess with. However, at the same time as the exciting announcement, which was received as mentioned long before the war, a lot of criticism was directed towards Marvel for including in the film an Israeli superheroine, and another one who is played by a “Zionist who served in the IDF”.

The bad news: as of this moment it appears that Sabra will no longer appear in the film, at least not as originally planned. Although in the new trailer you can see Shira Haas in several shots, there was no trace of the Israeli superhero in them, and Haas was seen in the scenes as a full-fledged agent. In addition, in a new official synopsis published yesterday on Marvel’s website, the character of Haas is described as follows: “Ruth Beth Sharaf. A former black widow, and now a senior American government woman who won the trust of President Ross (Harrison Ford, who replaced the late William Hart – D” So the Israeli name did remain, but it appears that Marvel Studios gave in to the pressure and changed the background of Ruth, a dangerous and/or Israeli heroine, to a black widow of Russian origin (just like Scarlett Johansson and Florence Pugh who played similar characters in the past).

In recent months, the production of “Captain America: Brave New World” has gone through a period of significant improvements, during which quite a few new scenes were shot for the film and major storylines were changed – this once morest the background of reports of very lukewarm reactions in early test screenings. It is likely that the disavowal of Ruth Bat-Sharaf’s “Israeliness” and her transformation into a black widow was a significant part of these re-photographs. The film will be released on February 14.
