The last episode of Loki reveals for the first time a character who should have been present for 4 films already!
In the third episode of Loki, a character from the Nordic pantheon appears for the first time in the MCU. This is Balder, one of Odin’s sons and therefore brother of Thor and Loki. Don’t expect long dialogues from him since the first one appears in the form of a statue. Indeed, at the Chicago World’s Fair, Mobius and the God of Mischief came across a stand that presented Nordic mythology with some wooden sculptures. Loki says, as usual in a sarcastic tone, that the diorama is embarrassing and that we would never have heard of Balder anyway. A fun nod to a character who should have been in four more Marvel films before being left out. The scene was uploaded to YouTube by Marvel.
Who is Balder even?
Loki is not wrong, no one has heard of him in the MCU. In the comics, Balder is another half-brother of Thor, he is known as the god of light. His combat skills are incredible, he is considered to be stronger than the God of Thunder. He made his first appearance in 1962 in issue #85 of Journey into Mystery. In mythology, he is called Baldr and is killed by Loki, because the latter is jealous of his kingdom in the heavens where evil is banished. We understand better why he is salty in the series.
Poor Balder got kicked out of the cast 4 times
Costume designer Graham Churchyard had already in an interview with ComicBook that he was to appear in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness but also in the first Thor!
We went really far with the conception of the courageous Balder (for Doctor Strange 2), and then we waited and waited and waited for someone to play the role. (…) To summarize very briefly and succinctly: poor, brave Balder was already supposed to appear in Thor 1 and Thor 2 and Thor 3, poor man (…) I don’t think he’ll appear any time soon.
According to rumors, Balder was to be played by Daniel Craig to be part of the Illuminati of Earth-838 alongside Black Bolt, Captain Carter or even Professor Xavier, an already minor role therefore. In short, his first appearance will surely remain his last. As a reminder, the first three episodes of Loki are available for streaming on Dinsey+.
