Marvel and George RR Martin: Done

Last Friday, Marvel formalized its collaboration with Georges RR Martin. The author, known to be the originator of the work that served as source material for the series Game of Thrones and who contributed his pen to the long-awaited game Elden Ringwill wear a comic book adaptation of his series Wild Cards. It was via a tweet and an article published on its blog that Marvel brought the news, as well as the first cover of the first volume:

Available on June 1 with its first volume, Wild Cards will be written by Paul Cornell (Docteur Who) and designed by Mike Hawthorne (Deadpool, Daredevil, Spider-man & Wonder Woman). And it’s Paul Cornell who says he’s honored to bring the series to a new format:

Wild Cards is a unique take on superheroes (…) I am honored and thrilled to bring all of these wonderful stories to their natural home at Marvel, and hope to pay tribute to George, Melinda and the rest of the collective of Wild Cards for making their superhero mythos new again.

Compliments returned by George RR Martin:

As my fans know, the world of Wild Cards has a special place in my heart. Having the privilege of seeing it adapted into comics by a juggernaut like Marvel couldn’t make me happier.

An anthology in the world of superheroes

But then concretely, Wild Cards, What is that ? It is an anthology of short stories edited by George RR Martin. The latter is also a contributor alongside a dozen other authors, including Melinda M. Snodgrass, co-editor and co-founder of the work. The compilation includes sixteen short stories and five interludes, taking place on Earth in 1946 but in a reality very different from ours: in its attempt to annihilate a neighboring planet, the planet Takis develops a virus capable of rewriting human DNA. The latter is released over New York and decimates 90% of the population. The survivors, also affected by the virus, come out transformed: those who have received superpowers are called Aces, while others receive physical deformities that give them their name. Joker.

As mentioned above, the first volume should be available on June 1st. In the meantime, RR Martin fans can always fall back on Elden Ring: the author of the Iron Throne participated in the creation of the game universe of FromSoftware studios (Dark Souls, Sekiro : Shadows Die Twice…). Released February 25 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series and Xbox One.
