„No taming this beast/ Flash teeth through a gnarled jaw/ Taking this feast whilst you reach for the first draw“: The whiz kids Maruja stand on One Hand Behind the Devil under steam like rarely.
„One hand behind the devil the other touching grace/ Thought begin to meddle push morals out of place/ The opium of faith it lies between the love and hate“ chants Harry Wilkinson, before saxophonist Joseph Carroll leads the English, who remain loyal to the single format, into sinister dive bars behind the poisonous tirade regarding post-rock edginess, and One Hand Behind the Devil thus providing an almost conciliatory conclusion.
Rumbling in front of it Maruja with an enormously intense performance along powerful drums (whose powerful attitude allows you to ignore the fact that drummer Jacob Hayes doesn’t seem to have a particularly variable set of beats) over apocalyptic sound worlds, reciting with feverish agitation and a massive accent over the jazzy art-post-punk Jam that literally vibrates with urgency: 2023 remains a triumphant year for Maruja.
