Maru Tefri: “The Israeli flag fills us with pride, but I probably shouldn’t have run with it”

The men’s Olympic marathon ended not long ago with disappointment on the part of the three Israeli runners. Maru Tefri finished only in 26th place, Geshau Ayala in 31st place and Girma Emre was the last of the runners in blue and white to cross the finish line, being in 44th place. The gaps between the expectations of the three and the result achieved were large.

Tefri was the first to tell Israel Hayom about the feeling: “I didn’t live up to my expectations of finishing in the top 10, but the three of us are happy to reach the finish line, because it was fun to run with the guys after we trained a lot together.” About the Israeli flag given to him near the end of the run, he said: “It fills us with pride, but I probably shouldn’t have run with it in the last hundred meters.”

Amra joined the feeling and said: “I am happy to represent the State of Israel on the biggest stage. Disappointments are part of sports, but thanks to all the people of Israel who encouraged us even when there were threats against us, it gave us strength. The people of Israel have tremendous strength, many of them encouraged us throughout the route”.
