Martinique Placed on Cyclone Orange Vigilance: Tropical Storm Bret’s Impact and Safety Measures

The authorities have reinforced the level of vigilance which changes from yellow to orange cyclone this Wednesday, June 21, 2023. The strong tropical storm Bret continues its evolution in the Atlantic and should reach the Caribbean arc during the day of Thursday (June 22, 2023).

At the end of the crisis cell which was held this Wednesday followingnoon in the prefecture, Martinique was placed on cyclone orange vigilance.

The Bret phenomenon is qualified as a strong tropical storm. Its trajectory will mainly impact the center and the south of the island. Its characteristics are as follows:

Winds with an average value of 70 to 80 km/h in the South, and 60 to 70 km/h in the North. Gusts might reach average values ​​of 100 to 120 km / h and up to 150 km / h in some places.
The waves might reach 3 to 4 meters on average, and up to 5 meters on the coast, as well as 6 meters in the channels.
Heavy showers are expected, with total rainfall estimated at between 100 and 150 mm on average.

Town halls and operational services must put their crisis management systems on active standby.

The first cyclone chaser reconnaissance flight revealed that Tropical Storm Bret has strengthened slightly. Strong winds and heavy rain over parts of the Lesser Antilles are expected from Thursday.
