Martina Vondrová died at the age of 57. The wife of MEP and long-time politician Alexander Vondra died in her sleep surrounded by her loved ones after a long battle with a serious illness. “It is with pain in my heart that I announce to you that God has called his beloved wife, mother, grandmother, colleague and friend Martina Vondrová, née Kafková,” Alexandr Vondra announced on social networks.
Martina Vondrová was the wife of Alexander Vondra for 37 years and worked as a teacher, caregiver and finally psychotherapist in the Litoměřice hospice. The Charter 77 signatory had recently been suffering from a serious illness and died shortly before midnight on August 21, the anniversary of the occupation.

Vondra announced on his Facebook profile that Martina Vondrová died in the presence of her loved ones and in her sleep after a brave and long battle with the disease. The MEP added that his wife turned 57 this July. “She was born on the anniversary of the conquest of the Bastille, she signed Charter 77 at the age of twenty, she left us on the anniversary of the occupation. It’s early, it’s not fair. But life is like that sometimes,” said Vondra.
The politician further announced that the last farewell will take place during the funeral mass on the afternoon of August 31 in St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Litoměřice. “She didn’t play for anything, she was modest, but all the more she helped many people – as a teacher, carer or therapist. Majda, thank you! Rest in peace.”
