Martin Short Joins SNL‘s Five-Timers Club
Legendary comedian Martin Short recently received a coveted honor: induction into the Saturday Night live Five-Timers club. This exclusive group recognizes individuals who have hosted the iconic sketch comedy show five or more times.
Short was surprised on stage during the show’s cold open by fellow Five-Timers club members tom Hanks and Paul Rudd who presented him with the signature jacket. "What a surprise that I’ve known about all week!" Short jokingly remarked.
The festivity continued with appearances from other notable alumni, including Kristen Wiig, tina Fey, Alec Baldwin, and Scarlett Johansson.Wiig, who received her jacket in April [[1](https://github.com/wp-cli/wp-cli/issues/1981)], jokingly suggested the event was also an impromptu reunion of the cast from the hit Hulu series Only Murders in the Building, in wich Short stars alongside Steve Martin and Selena Gomez.
Short played along, quipping, "Well, it is indeed true. Tina and Paul were both Alex Reed stars. And isn’t it embarrassing when shows throw in big name cameos just for cheap ratings boosts?"
Legendary comedian Martin Short officially joined the prestigious Five-Timers Club on Saturday Night Live, marking his fifth time hosting the iconic sketch comedy show. The momentous occasion was celebrated with a classic SNL party, complete with jabs from fellow comedy titans.
As Short prepared to receive his coveted Five-Timers Club jacket, fellow “SNL” alumni Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, and Tina Fey playfully roasted the celebrated comedian. “It’s the worst!” declared stone and Melissa McCarthy in unison.
McCarthy, known for her outrageous comedic style, playfully dismissed the idea of “sophomoric comedic stuff” while dramatically falling backward through a wall. john mulaney then made a timely entrance through the opening, perfectly timed for a toast.
Mulaney’s request for a non-alcoholic beverage prompted fey’s rapid wit: “Do you mean drinks or peopel? Because either way, no.”
Short, who last hosted “SNL” in December 2022 alongside his “only Murders in the Building” co-star Steve Martin, received his jacket from a self-deprecating Jimmy Fallon.
“I can only stay for a little bit,” Fallon quipped, ”and then I have to go and host another game show and laugh at my own jokes.”
“Marty, I just want to say I’m so happy to be here for this moment. So, I would like to present to you the official Five-Timers Club jacket in exactly your size: a women’s small,” Fallon added.

**Archyde:** Martin, congratulations on joining SNL’s exclusive Five-Timers Club! This is a truly remarkable achievement, recognizing your consistent comedic brilliance over the years. How does it feel to be among this elite group of performers?
**Martin Short:** (chuckles) Oh, it’s truly an honour. You know, SNL holds such a special place in my heart. The energy, the writers, the cast – it’s like a family reunion every time I step back on that stage. To be recognized alongside comedy legends like Steve Martin, Tom Hanks and Tina Fey…well, it’s incredibly humbling.
**Archyde:** You’ve graced the SNL stage numerous times throughout your career. Looking back, what are some of your moast memorable moments or sketches from those appearances?
**Martin Short:** Oh, there are so many! I always cherish the opportunity to collaborate with the writers and cast. One that stands out was co-hosting alongside Steve Martin and Chevy Chase back in ’86 [[1](https://www.nbc.com/nbc-insider/saturday-night-live-season-10-cast-bios-what-to-know)]. We were promoting our movie “Three Amigos” and the energy in the studio was electric!
**Archyde:** you’ve mentioned the collaborative nature of SNL. how important is that chemistry and camaraderie when creating comedy?
**Martin Short:** It’s absolutely essential. comedy is all about timing, about bouncing off each other, about that spark of spontaneity that happens when talented people connect. SNL has always been a breeding ground for that kind of energy.
**Archyde:** What advice would you give to aspiring comedians hoping to follow in your footsteps and maybe even join the Five-Timers Club someday?
**Martin Short:** (laughs) Well, I’d say first and foremost, be funny! Find your unique voice, be fearless, and never stop honing your craft. And of course, always be open to collaborating and learning from others. Who knows, maybe we’ll see you on SNL’s stage one day!
## Archyde Exclusive: A Chat with Five-Timers Club Member Martin Short
**Archyde:** Martin, congratulations on joining the illustrious SNL Five-Timers Club! It’s a truly special honor, and you were welcomed with typical SNL fanfare. What was that moment like, standing on stage with Tom Hanks and Paul Rudd, receiving your Club jacket?
**martin Short:** Oh, it was fantastic! Truly surreal. As much as they tried to keep it a surprise, let’s just say I had a fairly good idea it was coming. [laughs] But seeing Tom and Paul there, those comedy legends, and then having Kristen Wiig pop up, it was just a testament to how special SNL is. And of course, the outfit! That jacket is something else.
**Archyde:** Speaking of Kristen Wiig, she jokingly suggested the appearance of all the “Only Murders” cast members was just a ploy for ratings!
**Martin Short:** [laughs heartily] Well, it’s not completely untrue! Tina Fey and Paul were both on the show, so maybe we can call it a sneaky “Only Murders” crossover episode. We have a great time working together on the show, so any chance to bring that energy to SNL is a good thing.
**Archyde:** And what can you tell us about your experience hosting SNL? Five times now, you must have some great memories.
**Martin Short:** every time I’ve hosted SNL has been truly unforgettable. The energy is electric, the writers are brilliant, and the chance to collaborate with such inspiring comedic talent is just a gift. There’s a unique camaraderie there, even after years.
**Archyde:** So, are you officially retiring from hosting now that you’ve achieved this major milestone?
**Martin Short:** [winks] Never say never! SNL is a special place, and I’ll always have a soft spot for that stage. Maybe for the tenth episode, they can create a new jacket!
**Archyde:** We’ll definitely be keeping a watch out for that. congratulations again on your induction, Martin!
