Martin Scorsese will adapt his cult film into a series (and we are very hot)

After his cult film of 2002, the filmmaker Martin Scorsese va adapter Gangs of New York serial.

While the filmmaker’s aficionados are already yearning to discover his next film Killers of the Flower Moona western which, according to its screenwriter Eric Roth, promises unheard of, Martin Scorsese tirelessly continues to multiply future projects.

Besides the much-anticipated – albeit obviously cursed – series The Devil in the White Cityof which the filmmaker is executive producer, the latter will soon be at the helm of The Wager, an epic film centered on a shipwreck starring Leonardo DiCaprio, a biopic centered on the psychedelic rock band Grateful Dead carried by Jonah Hill for Apple TV+, as well as another on the president of the United States Theodore Roosevelt, which will be interpreted, again, by Leonardo DiCaprio. If the filmmaker already seems to have a bit of work to do, it would seem that it is not enough yet, since it was recently announced that the latter had a brand new project in the pipeline.

Gangs of New York

Indeed, according to information relayed by DeadlineMartin Scorsese and the production company Miramax would be hitched to the development of a series adapted from Herbert Asbury’s novel, Gangs of New York. Needless to recall that the filmmaker had already made a point of bringing the story to the screen in 2002. Worn by Leonardo DiCaprio (whose Scorsese definitely never tires of) and Daniel Day-Lewis, the feature film which has become cult has notably been nominated for no less than a dozen Oscars, and won two Golden Globes and a BAFTA in 2003.

Martin Scorsese will therefore be called upon to direct the first two episodes of the series, while the writing has been entrusted to screenwriter and playwright Brett C. Leonard (also executive producer of the upcoming series Shantaram). For the moment, little information has been released regarding the main plot of the film, but according to a source at Deadline, the series will take more time to develop several characters from the original novel that were omitted from the film. On this subject, Scorsese thus confided:

“This era of American history and its legacy is rich with characters and storylines that we couldn’t fully explore in a two-hour film. A television series gives us more time and creative freedom to bring a this universe, as well as all the questions it continues to raise in our current society.”

It should also be noted that this new rehabilitation project is completely independent of the one initially initiated in 2013, again by Miramax. This old revisit of Asbury’s novel by Scorsese aimed to follow organized gangs not only in New York City, but also in Chicago and New Orleans, depicting by extension the birth of organized crime on the American continent.

Of course, the project is still at a very embryonic stage. No casting or filming date, let alone a release date has been announced at this time.. It will therefore be a question of taking one’s troubles patiently before discovering this new iteration of Gangs of New York by the filmmaker. Until then, the public will have plenty of time to discover Killers of the Flower Moon, which should invest in the Apple TV+ platform in 2023.
