Martin Scorsese Reveals Leonardo DiCaprio’s Improvisations Annoyed Him and Robert De Niro: The Clash of Acting Methods in ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’

In a profile published on the website of the American magazine of the Wall Street Journal, Martin Scorsese revealed that Leonardo DiCaprio’s improvisations on the set of the film “Killers of the Flower Moon” tended to annoy him and Robert De Niro.

A gap between generations. Martin Scorsese directed his two favorite actors in “Killers of the Flower Moon”: Robert De Niro, with whom he made 10 films, and Leonardo DiCaprio, who has 6 with the director. Unfortunately for the latter, his two “muses” work in completely different ways, which may have caused some annoyance on the part of Robert De Niro during filming.

In a portrait produced by the American site of Wall Street Journal, Martin Scorsese explained how Leonardo DiCaprio’s attempts at improvisation ended up irritating him and the 80-year-old actor. “Every once in a while, Bob and I would glance at each other and roll our eyes a little. And we said to DiCaprio: ‘You don’t need to say that line,'” he said, specifying in passing that the (younger) actor tended to talk a lot on the film set, while Robert De Niro often remained silent.

Two different methods

Martin Scorsese had already mentioned the differences between the two actors a month ago during a press conference. If he specifies that Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro complemented each other perfectly on screen, he could not help but notice the differences of each in the approach to their profession.

“I quickly realized that I could work with Leo if I talked with him a lot. His method, in my eyes, requires an ongoing conversation, an exploration of each moment. With De Niro, it’s a little different. Yes, we discuss, but then there is a period of calm,” he indicated, emphasizing that, for him, the two actors possessed the same quality: “They are not frightened by acting, and are ready to try anything.
