Venezuelan starter Martín Pérez got his first win with the San Diego Padres on Wednesday, a Major League Baseball organization he joined via trade from the Pittsburgh Pirates a couple of weeks ago.
The left-hander’s victory was against his former team. The religious team defeated the ninth filibuster 8-2 at Petco Park to continue fighting for the top spot in the National League West Division.
In the game, Perez worked for five and a third innings in which he only allowed one run, which was a solo home run by Joey Bart. In total he allowed five hits, gave up one walk and struck out eight.
Record in 2024
The native of Portuguesa left his record at three wins and five losses. His first success with San Diego came in his third start with that team, although in the previous two he also had a great performance but was not lucky enough to win the award.
His teammates and fellow countrymen David Peralta and Luis Arráez also contributed to the Padres’ 69th win this season.
Peralta went 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs and one run scored. Arráez finished 2-for-4 with one RBI and stepped on the plate once.
San Diego is 69-53 and second in the National League West, 2.5 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers. It has the fourth-best record in the National League, so it is alive in the race for a postseason berth.
