However, it has been 50 years since Martin Cooper, the inventor of the mobile phone, first introduced it. But when the mobile phone was invented 50 years ago, even Martin Cooper would not have thought that it would affect human life so much.
But he is frustrated with the way people use phones. Cooper, 94, expressed his frustration in a recent interview, saying he was “broken” when he saw people crossing the street looking at their phones, adding that such behavior was reckless and dangerous. Despite his concerns, Cooper still believes that the mobile phone has great potential to positively transform society. He suggests that the device might one day conquer disease.
“But I still don’t understand how to use a cell phone like my grandchildren and great-grandchildren do,” the 94-year-old told AFP.
As an American engineer called the “father of the cell phone,” Cooper was instrumental in the mass production of Motorola’s first handheld mobile phone on April 3, 1973. He made the first public mobile phone call with a device weighing 1.1 kg. He is the co-founder and current chairman of Dyna LLC in Del Mar, California.
Meanwhile, Martin uses the latest iPhone. Any new model that comes out will be bought and thoroughly tested. But Martin Cooper admits that with millions of apps available on the phone, it can all seem a bit overwhelming. In late 1972, he decided he wanted a phone that might be used anywhere. About three months later in 1973, Motorola introduced the first wireless cellular phone, the Dyna TAC 800. At this time he was working for Motorola and this phone weighed over a kilo. It had a battery life of regarding 25 minutes of talk time.
