“For more than 30 years, at each National Day, tens of thousands of people have their eyes riveted on the Château de la Bâtiaz. This year, it will be the last time that the public will be able to admire the famous fireworks of Martigny”. It was in a press release released this Friday that the Martigny Development Company announced the end of an era in the lower Valais city.
This press release specifies that the main sponsor of these fires has decided to throw in the towel: “The bans, the pollution, the noise generated and the high cost of the operation prompted Léonard Gianadda to give up funding the fires once once more. ‘artifice”. But the 2023 fires will still take place thanks to the money earmarked for the 2022 fires, which had been canceled due to the drought. If this should be the case once more this year, there will be no 2024 edition.
The director of Martigny Tourisme, Fabian Clivaz, specifies that times are changing: “The Development Company, like the Municipality, fully understands Léonard Gianadda’s position. Between the Covid years, the drought, the costs and the pollution caused by the powder of the fireworks, the time has come to review the concept of the National Day”. From 2024, it will be celebrated in a different way “with a new festive and more sustainable concept”.
