According to the technical director delegated to professional arbitration, requested by the daily L’Equipe, the cancellation of the goal of OM in Metz (2-2), Friday, is explained by images which were not broadcast on television.

It’s been a strong trend since the start of the season, and it doesn’t just concern its matches in Ligue 1, OM are angry with the refereeing. The Marseille club, eliminated in the third preliminary round of the Champions League, considers itself aggrieved by a number of contentious decisions. And if they did not want to take refuge behind the use of VAR to explain their current setbacks this weekend, the dissatisfaction of the Marseillais is real.

New example on Friday, in Metz (2-2), where OM were deprived of a goal that would have allowed them to lead 2-0 at the start of the second period. Instead, the Marseillais conceded two and had to whip to snatch the equalizer in numerical superiority, in the last ten minutes of regulation time.

Lannoy: “We see a proven contact”

Launched to the right of the surface, in the 52nd, Aubameyang turned to deliver a perfect cross on the head of Rongier who only had to push the ball into the empty goal. But the video assistance detected a fault by Ismaïla Sarr, earlier in the action, and the referee finally canceled the goal, causing amazement and incomprehension on the Marseille bench. On the images available to the public, the fault did not seem clear enough to cause the cancellation of the goal, but Stéphane Lannoy, technical director delegated to professional arbitration, justified this decision in the columns of the Team by images that would not have been broadcast on television.

“I watched the match live on TV and, with the images shown, I did not see any fault situation at the time, he confided to our colleagues. But, looking at the cameras used by the VAR, we see a proven contact. The images from the opposite camera did not appear on the air and they show that Mr. Sarr never touches the ball. Not with his first leg, but with his second supporting leg on the ground, he comes to touch the foot of the Messin to the point of unbalancing it and committing the fault (…) “It is the opposite camera which makes it switch. This proves the interest for the video assistant to work on the different angles.”

Will this explanation be enough to appease the anger of the Marseille leaders? Still according to L’Equipe, Stéphane Lannoy offered an exchange time to OM, who had requested it. The videoconference, which is to be held this Tuesday morning, will precisely allow the DTA to show the “significant” fault which led to the triggering of the VAR protocol.
