Mars helicopter “Ingenuity” flies and flies – despite the incident

The Mars helicopter “Ingenuity”, whose mission was actually only intended for 30 days, has already completed more than 50 flights. On the 53rd flight, however, there was a small incident, the US space agency NASA said. The helicopter landed unscheduled regarding halfway through the scheduled flight. Why this happened is now being investigated.

The 54th flight – a comparatively uncomplicated and short 25-second “hop” – went as planned once more and the data from it would now help in the investigation of the incident. “Ingenuity” (ingenuity) landed on Mars in February 2021 with the rover “Perseverance” (stamina).

Shortly therefollowing, the helicopter, which is powered by lithium-ion batteries and weighs around 1.8 kilograms, was the first aircraft to complete a flight on another planet. The helicopter’s mission, which was actually only intended to last 30 days and has to withstand the extreme conditions on Mars, has long been extended indefinitely.
