In the 1980s, good arts teachers recommended that their students read Mars, by Fritz Zorn. Do they still do it? The anger of a 32-year-old Swiss writer ( once morest his parents and the world as it is) and his depression might echo those of a teenager. Born on what is called “the golden shore of Lake Zurich”, the author suffering from cancer attributed his illness to his background, his parents, his country, and himself: “Also, I personally think that cancer is primarily a mental illness.” It’s an acid book, funny, very intelligent. Here is a good definition of neurosis: “If we have to give credence to the definition that a neurotic is a being who never lives in the present, but can only withdraw, always, in the future or in the past, it is certain that I I gathered from my first years of university all the conditions to satisfy this one. Fitz Zorn wrote this story in 1976. He died a few weeks later. Here it is retranslated by an excellent translator, Olivier Le Lay, and with a no less remarkable preface by Philippe Lançon, journalist at Release. V.B.-L.
