All that remains of Beverly and Roger Johnson’s property is rubble. The couple lost almost everything in their home town of Hutchinson, Kansas, in a large forest fire. But they were still lucky: because they were able to save themselves at the very last second! According to information from the local TV station KWCH, the fire was caused by a burning pile of branches and developed into a life-threatening fire roller. The extent of the flames and how devastated the property of the two looks – in our video!

Beverly called her daughter: “I’m going to burn. Goodbye, I love you.”

Speaking to US broadcaster CNN, Beverly Johnson said the fire came from afar over a mountain. The flames were higher than the trees and were already over her car. She called her daughter and said, “I’m going to burn. Goodbye, I love you”.

The pond at the house is the last resort

She loses sight of her husband, who is also on the property, in the thick smoke, according to Beverly Johnson in the CNN interview. She makes one last attempt to escape the flames and escapes into the large pond at the edge of the property. There she finds protection and on the shore also her husband! Roger Johnson is already sitting there, believing he has lost his wife: “I really thought it was all over. She’s dead. Then when I saw her, I mightn’t believe it – I just mightn’t believe it”.

It’s the last vestige of what Beverly and Roger Johnson might once call home.

The Johnsons manage to escape at the last second, but one person dies in the blaze in Hutchinson, KWCH reports. 127 buildings – including 35 residential buildings – and 110 vehicles were destroyed.

Couple want to rebuild house

After this shock, many people would probably just want to leave. Away from the horrible pictures, the place where they almost lost their lives. “We’re going through the ashes and see what we can find,” said Roger Johnson. And his wife continues: “All things from 46 years are simply gone”. But they don’t want to give up, on the contrary: The Johnsons stay and want to rebuild everything. (kbü)
