A Quebecer saw his engagement proposal plan in Mexico spoiled by Air Canada, which lost his suitcase containing his precious ring for ten days.
“I had everything planned. A dinner on the water’s edge, the whole picture. I also had two suits with clean shoes in my suitcase to make my request with my knee on the ground,” breathes Marc-André Bessette, a resident of Granby, in Estrie, on the line.
On October 25, he flew to Cancun for an all-inclusive trip that he and his partner had been waiting for for a long time.
Upon his arrival in Mexico, excitement gives way to stress, while Mr. Bessette is unable to find his checked baggage.
“The Air Canada representative told me, ‘I’m sorry sir, your suitcase never left Montreal’.”
Surprise screwed up
In addition to all his clothes and a large medicine kit for him and his partner, Mr. Bessette’s suitcase contained a ring worth nearly $400.
He planned to offer it to his better half by making the big request under the Mexican sun. The couple had been officially married since 2020, but hadn’t had the opportunity to stage a nice formal proposal due to the pandemic.
“I had it [la bague] put it in my suitcase so she doesn’t see it. My goal was to surprise him.”
“It completely scrapped That [demande de fiançailles]”, deplores Mr. Bessette, who is not angry with Air Canada, which he believes is responsible for this mess. “Now my partner knows, so it won’t be the same surprise it was supposed to be.”
As if that wasn’t enough, the couple has experienced other misadventures and sees their trip as “a nightmare.” Among these, Mr. Bessette’s partner spent a day in the hospital following being very ill while she was deprived of the medication she takes for her fragile stomach, which was in the lost luggage. .

Not found… in Montreal
Mr. Bessette’s suitcase never made it to Mexico during his trip. Back in Montreal on Wednesday, he finally thought he would be able to recover it at the Air Canada lost baggage counter.
Alas, “we waited an hour, but the gentleman found nothing. We are told to go away,” laments Mr. Bessette.
It was finally on Saturday that the airline contacted Mr. Bessette to tell him that it had found his suitcase, the day following an email sent by The newspaper to Air Canada asking for explanations on the situation.
“It appears he was not directed properly following recording as he had lost his label. Unfortunately, it still bore an old label from a previous trip with another airline, which explains why it took us a while to find it,” said Christophe Hennebelle, vice-president of communications for Air Canada, on Sunday, who “regrets » the experience lived by Mr. Bessette.
According to him, errors of this kind are “rare”, but can occur. “This is why we recommend that our customers always place their medications and high-value items, especially jewelry, in their carry-on baggage,” added Mr. Hennebelle.
“There should be changes in baggage management and human contact,” deplores Mr. Bessette. I was being treated like a number and an amount of money.”
