Marquez files a complaint against Edmundo Gonzalez before the ICC Prosecutor’s Office

For the crime of political persecution and inhuman treatment committed against Edmundo González Urrutia, the human rights defender, president of the El Amparo Foundation and general director of the International Committee Against Impunity in Venezuela (CICIVEN), Walter Márquez, filed a complaint before the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), as reported on Tuesday, August 27, at a press conference.

Márquez stated that both Nicolás Maduro as head of State and the Attorney General of the Republic, Tarek William Saab, have dedicated themselves to insulting and attacking him, and now the Public Ministry through the 36th national assistant prosecutor, Luis Dueñez, has summoned them on two occasions, accusing him of acts that he has not committed, such as falsification of public documents, usurpation of functions, criminal association, computer crimes and conspiracy.

“These are crimes invented by the regime in the face of the crushing defeat on July 28. Edmundo González and María Corina Machado have published documents that are public by their very nature, the minutes of the vote count. The moment they are signed by the witnesses, the members of the polling station, they become public documents and publishing them on a website is a constitutional right, it is a citizen’s right. What happens is that we are in the presence of what in Nazi Germany was called the criminal classification of the enemy or also what I call the law of the mirror. They reflect on the opposition what they do,” he said.

Walter Márquez stressed that these are simulated crimes by the regime, which is why we are facing the simulation of a punishable act. “Edmundo González is fulfilling the constitutional duty of Article 132 of the Magna Carta to defend human rights. The right to vote is a human right,” he said.

The human rights defender stated that the crimes were committed by Nicolás Maduro and his subordinates, when the National Electoral Council (CNE) and its president, Elvis Amoroso, falsified the proclamation act on July 29; when the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ) committed electoral fraud against Edmundo González with a sentence without basis or evidence; and when the Attorney General of the Republic committed the crime of political persecution against González.

“We have documented this and have reported it to the International Criminal Court as a crime against humanity, political persecution and also as a crime of inhuman treatment,” added Walter Márquez.
