The Marqués de Valdecilla University Hospital has received the Seal of Quality in Multidisciplinary Information for Oncology Patients, making this hospital center one of the five Spanish hospitals that have this certification, granted by the Medicines and Products Sciences Foundation Sanitarios (Fundamed) with the collaboration of the General Alliance of Patients (AGP) and the support of BeiGene.
The Seal of Quality in Information for Oncology Patients evaluates that the hospital service carries out an information quality policy, which must be truthful, understandable and appropriate to the individual situation of each patient.
Its goal is to ensure that all patients have access to scientific and healthcare information that helps them understand their disease, its prognosis, treatment options, and possible short- and long-term side effects.
The act of awarding this Seal of Quality, which took place in the Gómez Durán auditorium of the Marqués de Valdecilla Hospital itself, was attended by its managing director, Rafael Tejido; Virginia Martínez, a doctor from the Valdecilla Pharmacy Service and head of the oncology section, as well as the director of Market Access at BeiGene, Vanesa Roig, and the director of Quality at Fundamed, Paloma García del Moral.
Virginia Martínez has received the recognition and has thanked the support of both the Quality Department and the hospital management.
Martínez has assured that precision medicine is essential in oncology. “We have a clean room in which we prepare all the chemotherapy for the entire hospital. The robotization of the oncology pharmacy favors patient safety due to the precision in the preparation of the drug and also enhances the safety of the professionals because the technicians only have contact with chemotherapy at the time of loading and unloading,” he said.
He added that the number of cancer patients treated has increased by approximately 25% and spending on cancer pharmacies has doubled. In addition, the hospital has doubled the number of currently active trials in the last two years, “which allows new therapeutic options for our patients,” he pointed out.
Tejido, for its part, has considered that “information is the fundamental tool to enable the participation of patients in the disease process.”
“This seal has a double recognition, the excellent work of the professionals and the positioning of the patients in the center of our activity”, he highlighted.
The hospital manager conveyed his gratitude “to all the professionals who have made this award possible, a multidisciplinary effort that includes the Pharmacy, Oncology, Hematology services and the Day Hospital and Quality Units”.
