Marketa Vondrousova Secures Unexpected Grand Slam Win at Wimbledon: Tennis News and Highlights

Marketa Vondrousova (WTA 42) picked up an unexpected first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon. The Czech won 6-4 6-4 in the final against Tunisian Ons Jabeur (WTA 6), who suffered her third failure in three major finals.

The 24-year-old left-hander, who also had the experience of a lost Grand Slam final (at Roland-Garros 2019), controlled her nerves much better than her unfortunate opponent. Ons Jabeur however led 4-2 in the initial set and 3-1 in the second set, before losing the thread of his tennis.

The weight of history therefore remains far too heavy for Jabeur (28), who dreams of giving African women’s tennis its first major singles trophy. Like last year against Elena Rybakina, she failed to assert her status as favorite in the final at Church Road. The Tunisian has never been able to tame a nervousness that is certainly legitimate. Even at 3-1 in his favor in the second set, while Marketa Vondrousova seemed to be losing momentum.

A 2nd title, 6 years after Biel

The difficulties encountered by Ons Jabeur should not, however, take anything away from the merits of Marketa Vondrousova. Operated twice on the left wrist since her first major final lost in 2019 in Paris against Ashleigh Barty, she struggled to return to the fore.

The Czech had found the front of the stage for the first time in 2021, adorning herself with silver at the Tokyo Olympics, where she had suffered the law of Belinda Bencic in three sets in the final. On forced rest for six months in 2022, she had however suffered a new setback to leave the top-100 of the hierarchy.
