At 47.2 in September (very slightly revised from 47.1 in flash estimate), the HCOB composite PMI of overall activity signaled a fourth consecutive monthly decline in euro zone private sector activity.
As a reminder, the Eurozone PMI index rose slightly to 47.1 in flash estimation, a level which however ‘signaled a drop of 0.4% in GDP in the third quarter compared to the second’, according to Hamburg Commercial Bank.
In August compared to the previous month, industrial producer prices increased by 0.6% in the euro area and by 0.5% in the EU, according to Eurostat estimates, following decreases in July of respectively 0.5% in the eurozone and 0.7% in the EU.
Seasonally adjusted retail sales volume fell by 1.2% in the euro area and by 0.9% in the EU, compared to the previous month, according to estimates by Eurostat, the office statistics of the European Union.
Down sharply from 46 in August to 44.1 in September, the HCOB PMI composite index of overall activity signals a new marked contraction in activity in the French private sector, the largest since November 2020.
Concerning the United States, operators should scrutinize this followingnoon, in addition to the PMI and ISM services indices, the ADP survey which will give a first indication of the labor market in September, before the official report on Friday.
