Markaziya – Awareness information about Lebanon’s geological reality and Nimr: It is not a matter of intimidation

The geology researcher at the American University, Tony Nemer, wrote in a series of tweets on his Twitter account: “The earthquake that occurred today to the west of the Greek island of Crete is of a magnitude of 5.4 and is about 1,230 km from Beirut.”

He added, “The center of this tremor (yellow star) is located in the Hellenic Arc, which is one of the largest geological structures in the Mediterranean.”

Nimr continued, “There is no relationship between this tremor and what happened in Turkey on February 6, but it should be noted that in the year 365 AD, an earthquake occurred on the Hellenic Arc south of Crete with a magnitude of 8.3, which is one of the strongest earthquakes in the history of the region, followed by Huge tsunamis on the coasts of many Mediterranean countries.”

He concluded by saying, “This information comes in the context of raising awareness of our geological reality in the Mediterranean, and not out of fear at all. Once again, when we feel or know of an earthquake, we must move away from the beach immediately as a matter of caution until things become clear.”
