In mid-May, the ESC will enter its 66th round. The Appenzeller singer Marius Bear will compete for Switzerland in the Italian city of Turin, as the SRF has now announced.

In just a few weeks the time has come: The Eurovision Song Contest will enter the 66th round.

Musicians from all over Europe will meet in the Italian city of Turin from May 10th to 14th under the motto “The Sound of Beauty” to take part in the largest music show in the world.

On Tuesday morning, SRF announced who would represent Switzerland this year.

It’s Marius Bear (28) from the canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden, who is known, among other things, for his cover of the song “I Wanna Dance With Somebody”.
Now it’s official: Marius Bear (28) from Enggenhütten in the canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden will represent Switzerland at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest – with the song “Boys Do Cry”. This was announced by the SRF in a message. The selection process was carried out by a 100-strong audience panel and a 20-strong international expert jury.
Marius wrote and produced his ESC song with songwriter Martin Gallop. “The timing mightn’t be better, I’m so keen on it. I am honored to represent Switzerland in Turin and to follow in the footsteps of Luca Hänni and Gjon’s Tears. The two have raised the bar quite a bit!”, the 28-year-old is quoted in the press release.
The song focuses on deep emotions: “I learned from an early age not to be ashamed of my feelings. As a man, I’m not afraid to cry and reveal my weaknesses to my audience. I don’t want to put on emotional armor, I want to be who I am. I would like to encourage my audience to do the same, »musicians continue in the message.
The singer is known, among other things, for his emotional cover of the song “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)”. He also made it into the hearts of the Swiss with songs like “Evergreen” and “Remember Me”.
ESC without Russia
Around 200 million viewers follow the music spectacle from their televisions every year. The 66th edition of the world’s largest music competition will take place from May 10th to 14th in the Italian city of Turin. This was made possible by the band Måneskin, who won the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 in Rotterdam with the song “Zitti e buoni”.
This year’s event is themed “The Sound of Beauty” and will be moderated by Laura Pausini, one of the most successful Italian singers, Alessandro Cattelan, a well-known Italian presenter, and Mika, a Lebanese-British singer and composer.
However, one country has had to forgo its participation this year: following Russian troops invaded Ukraine, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) excluded Russia from the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 on February 25. This means that 40 instead of the previous 41 countries are now taking part in the ESC in Italy.
Two wins for Switzerland
The expectations of Marius Bear are definitely high: Switzerland has been able to prove itself twice over in the past two shows. The singer Gjon’s Tears (23) made it to third place last year. Luca Hänni (27) from Bern took fourth place in 2019. The ESC might not take place in 2020 due to the pandemic.
Switzerland last won first place in 1988, when Céline Dion (53) received “12 points” from the majority of the participating countries and the jury for her performance with the song “Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi”. The 33rd ESC took place in the Simmonscourt Pavilion of the Royal Dublin Society in Dublin. Only one person had previously won the title for Switzerland: in 1956, Lys Assia took first place with the song “Refrain”.
